The event was recorded by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later released by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It must not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling off shelves, glass breaking, etc.
At Binga (pop. 4,300) located 17 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as light tremors.
Weak tremors could have been felt at Sinasongwe (pop. 11,500) located 47 km from the epicenter, Maamba (pop. 12,300) at 50 km and Kamativi (pop. 1,600) at 83 km.
