A significant 5.7 magnitude earthquake strikes 128 km southeast of Bangai, Tonga early in the morning
5.7 earthquake May 29 04:32 (GMT +13)
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km below the epicenter near Bangai, Pangai, Ha’apai, Tonga, early in the morning of Sunday, May 29, 2022, at 4:32 a.m. local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies release their report.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many people as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could have been felt at Bangai (pop. 1,700) located 128 km from the epicenter.
