Fall Fishing Reaches its Peak – Second Day of Free Fishing (October 23)

The following is the weekly report for Lake Hopatcong Fishing as provided by Dows Boat & Bait Shop and Aaron Graybill of the Lake Hopatcong Guide Service.

With cooler weather and less boat traffic, fishing around the lake peaks for the fall.

  • We see beautiful walleye in the 3 to 5 pound range, caught by jigging and also by bait.
  • There are still hybrid tracers, caught on one of the points on the Rapala ice jigs, or herring.
  • Lots of white and yellow perch as well as crappies and we have seen pike in recent days.
  • Jim Welsh weighed with two nice 4-5 pound river cats caught with herring.

The state will hold its second free fishing day of the year on October 23rd where no license is required. Now is a great time to try fishing to see if it’s something you like.

Free Day Fishing in New Jersey:

June Free Fishing Day is organized in conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week; the October date allows the public to enjoy the fall stocking of trout. Remember: on these days, residents can fish in the public waters of the Garden State without a license or stamp for trout. All other regulations, including size and daily catch limits, remain in effect.

New Jersey’s Two-Day Free Fishing is a risk-free investment in an introduction to freshwater fishing in the Garden State, and the perfect time for families to enjoy two days of outdoor fun for free. While kids under the age of 16 don’t need a permit, these days offer a special benefit to adults who can have fun without having to buy a permit. That is, until they get addicted to a sport that just might turn out to be a fun life for the whole family.
