Fruit bites from July 20 to 22 Fight against weeds in the orchard

BL: Welcome back to another “Fruit Bites” presented by Valent USA With us again, Travis Shoenwald from Valent. And this week Travis, we’re talking about weed management in the orchard!

TS: Controlling weeds in the orchard doesn’t necessarily mean a field of barren soil, but controlling certain weeds can help reduce competition for water and nutrients as well as alternative hosts for leafhoppers that transmit viruses. Even dandelions compete for the attention of bees during bloom. Keeping weeds low below the tree’s drip line is crucial while leaving the drive row with grass, helps reduce erosion.

BL: what are the main weeds to watch out for?

TS: field bindweed – it wraps around sprinklers and can protrude from new trees.

Thistle – once in your orchard, few herbicides have an impact.

Mallow – alternate host for cherry leafhoppers which can transmit disease X

BL: So at the end of the day …

[wrap up/recommendation for control]

BL: Well, thanks Travis. Join us next time for Fruit Bites, presented by Valent. Until then, I’m Bob Larson.
